New for the 2012 spring term at Portland State University is a course called “Revolutionary Marxism: Theory and Practice”, where students will learn the fundamentals of Marxism and enacting revolution. The primary textbook will be “The Meaning of Marxism”, by Paul D’Amato. Mr. D’Amato was a distinguished guest at the 2010 Oregon Socialist Conference, which also took place at PSU, http://www.portlandsocialists.org/oregonsocialistconference/ .

Other material will include sections of “The Communist Manifesto”, sections of Vladimir Lenin book “The State and Revolution”, and a documentary based on the work of Howard Zinn. 30% of the grade will be based on a “Community Project”. Could that possibly have anything to do with the Occupy sign making festivities that took place at PSU in February?

Students will be required to attend 4 events of their choosing put on by a number of different approved groups. Some of them include Occupy PSU, Occupy Portland, International Socialist Organization, MeCHA, NAACP, Industrial Workers of the World (IWW, whom you might recall one occupier referring to the anarchists as to the right of), Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions (BDS, whom you may remember as the group that orchestrated the flash mob at New Seasons in protest of Israeli goods), or Jobs With Justice. That’s right, students will be required to attend events put on by such groups and receive credit for it.

Full syllabus of the class can be seen at https://5440fight.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/revolutionarymarxismtheoryandpractice.pdf .

This new course is part of the Chiron Studies. According to the PSU website, “Chiron Studies makes it possible for qualified…students to propose and instruct official, for credit classes”. The instructors for the Revolutionary Marxism class are 2 members of the International Socialist Organization. You might remember the ISO as being behind the counter protest at last year’s Tax Day Tea Party at Pioneer Square. In fairness to the 2 gentleman teaching this class, they were not part of that, but they have been part of several Occupy rallies.

Other Chiron classes include “Exploring Buffy The Vampire Slayer”, “History & Theory of Anarchism”, “Art Within Activism”, and “The Practical Joke”. Yes, that’s right, kids get college credit for talking about Buffy The Vampire Slayer. And you wonder why the USA is slipping in education, and our students can no longer compete with those from other developed countries?

Instructors of Chiron courses are also paid, and in many cases they receive school credit, depending on their major.

The committee for Chiron Studies committee consists of students, faculty, and members of the community. Current members include people who are well versed in the arts, social work, environmentalism, and even someone active with Invisible Children, the group behind the questionable, controversial, and, in some ways, debunked Kony 2012 video, which many are now claiming is only propaganda to deploy US military forces to Africa.

You can learn more about the Chiron Studies at http://www.pdx.edu/chiron/ . They are always considering adding courses. Perhaps a student should propose a “Revolutionary Hayekism” class?
